A fresh start for a well-loved public broadcaster

Radio New Zealand, 2016

In 2015 RNZ was undergoing a big shift from purely live-to-air radio towards a much wider journalism mix, particularly written news and some live video. Embedded within their team, I led the creation of a brand new editorial design direction, a layout system that could flex with the ebb and flow of news, and explored new ways to meet ever changing technologies and audience behaviours.

Content ‘atoms’ were the starting point for visual design changes.
RNZ’s diverse content mix includes everything from tech shows to classical music. Each area needed to be given enough flexibility to express itself whilst the overall brand and user experience remained coherent.
Flexible layout options for key aggregation pages catered to news days with especially important stories to those with many smaller stories of varying importance.
Native app explorations to test the editorial design direction.
